I love this article about the high price of ignoring home repairs. It is clean and easy to read. However, I am NOT in agreement with everything within it being accurate for our local area. For example, professionally upgrading the electrical wiring costs a few thousand dollars here in Silicon Valley rather than the few hundred they mention. Also, the last tree stump I had removed at my house was closer to $1,000, albeit it was to also remove the tree 🙂 Again the cost of cement repairs is far greater than stated here. When I replaced a section of my sidewalk a fews ago due to tree root raising the sidewalk, which created a significant tripping hazard, it was $2,345.
While I also am not a believer in “lean on your insurance because you have it”, many of these things average cost of damage quotes are typically covered by your home owners insurance. While I am sure there is some fine print in all of our insurance policies that could put the onerous on us, it still over all pays to keep up with your over all home maintenance so it does not become deferred maintenance.
